1.5 Building Empathy

Dad: “As a leader it is very important to respect the emotions of others. Emotions are subtle. When someone is hurt physically it will be healed over time. But when someone is hurt emotionally it doesn’t heal for a longer time, so We should hurt anyone around us.

Kannan: “Even in our school they teach us not to hurt anyone.”

Dad: “The leader of a team:

  • Should not underestimate anyone in the team.
  • Should Encourage the good qualities and ignore the mistakes of his peers.
  • Do not humiliate their weakness.
  • Talk to the peers casually and make them comfortable.
  • Encourage everyone on the team.
  • Everyone should be treated equally. Do not discriminate.
  • Always keep the team inspired.
  • Should not point out at anyone’s mistake rather he should make him understand where it went wrong.
  • Make decisions in consultation with the team.
  • Listen to the opinions of everyone on the team.
  • Should encourage every one’s talent and help them improve more.

MS Dhoni, who was the captain of our country’s cricket team was a leader with such qualities. That’s why his biography was made in to a movie and released. Talent alone do not make a leader. You can learn the qualities from him.

The leader of a country,

  • To fulfil the demands of the people.
  • Should keep up to the promise he made else will regret voting for him.
  • The Prime Minister should respect the thoughts and views of his own cabinet and even the opposition.
  • Should accept every one’s feedback.
  • Allegations made by the opposition or the public should be investigated and resolved.
  • We must act with the good intention of being the leader for everyone, regardless of race, religion or caste.
  • They must realize that there is no point in degrading the opposition and be determined to serve the people who have elected themselves by ballot.
  • Do not make false promises to people who seek them out.
  • Prove to be the best leader in action without wasting time teasing others.

Only when he serves the people in the best interests of the people, his reputation as a leader gets established. Abdul Kalam is such a great leader! The respect on him is still immortal even after his demise.

Even today, no one calls a leader a leader who does not respect the feelings of others. The best example of this is Mussolini and Hitler.”

Kannan: “Dad, I realized how important it is for leadership to value the feelings of others. Thanks!”

Summary
