3.4 Using Soap to Wash Hands

Content

Yashini was washing her hands before her lunch and then Kannan also came there to wash his hands. Kannan saw his sister washing her hands fast and asked her to stop.

Yazhini: “Why brother?”

Kannan: – ”Sister, you are washing your hands fast so you will have more dirty, harmful germs on your hands. Let me show you how to properly wash your hands with soap so that there will be no dirt in our hand, and we will not get sick.”

Yazhini: – ”Okay brother … you tell me.”

Kannan: – ” Observe my hands carefully and see what I am doing.

  • First of all take the soap and apply it on the hands.
  • Then rub well on the hands until the foam comes out.
  • Then you must rub all the fingertips just like we did when we used the sanitizer.
  • Do this for 10 seconds.
  • Finally wash your hands until the soap on your hands is completely gone.
  • This is how we wash our hands daily. Only then will all the harmful germs like dirt and bacteria on our hands go away.”

Yazhini: – ”Now I understand very well brother”

Father: ” kids, what are you doing here?”

Yazhini: – ”Dad, we came to wash our hands. Kannan anna told me how to wash my hands using soap.”

Dad: – ”Good dear. Kannan learnt this at school. That is why our Yashini should go to school and study like Kannan”

Kannan: – ” All right. Dad, we used Sanitizer at the supermarket this morning but you asked me to go home and wash my hands with soap as well, why?”

Dad: – ”While the sanitizer does kill most germs and is easy to use in public places, it does not kill all bacteria which may be microscopic so we use soap at home.”

Kannan: ” Then why not use soap and water in public places?”

Dad: ”There may be no pipes in those areas. The soap used by one person is often not intended to be used by another. We need water when using soap and there is a chance, we will spill water around and there is a chance that someone will slip and fall in that water.”

Mother: ” Yes. Dad is right. Besides, it is easy to use sanitizer in public places and it is a temporary solution. So even if we use sanitizer in public places, it is better to wash your hands with soap when you come home. Also do not use sanitizer for small children. Soaps can be used by everyone from children to adults.”

Kannan: – ”Mom, you and Dad are right. Have you been instructed by the World Health Organization to do all this?”

Mother: – ”Yes dear…. The World Health Organization works for the health of the people across the world and they have given all these guidelines for us to lead a healthy life”

Kannan: – ” I will also follow the health practices provided by World Health Organization, mother … then I can be as healthy as you and father. ”

Yazhini: “I too will be healthy by following hygiene practices”
