6.3 Respect Elders

Grandmother: “Dear kids,  In the last lesson our Grandpa taught us not to hurt anyone. In this lesson we will learn how to respect our elders.”

Naveen: “We are eager to learn Grandma!”

Meena: “Yes Grandma, me too”

Grandmother: “I am very happy to see the interest of my grandchildren to learn new things. OK let’s get into the course. Naveen, can you please tell who the elders are?”

Naveen: “We call people older than us as elders. They will have a lot of experience. We can learn a lot from them.”

Grandmother: “Naveen ‘s answer is correct. Megna, Can you please tell me five elders you know?”

Megna: “Mom, Dad, Teachers, Grandparents”

Grandmother: “You are right Megna.”

Megna: “Okay Grandma. Thank you!”

Grandmother: “ Let me explain to you how to respect elders. Listen carefully.

  • You must help elders when they need you.
  • If you see elderly people, pregnant women, or the disabled while traveling by bus, give them your seat.
  • If you see elders waiting for their needs in public places like in banks, shops,or hospitals, give them priority to move ahead.
  • Talk to them respectfully and kindly.
  • Welcome and entertain the elders who visit our home as guests.
  • Listen to the words of elders,You will be loved by them.
  • Be polite to elders.
  • Do not do bad things despite elder’s warning.Because they say it is in our best interest.
  • Don’t buy and ask for items that exceed the parent’s income. Keep in mind that many people don’t even get food.
  • Do not use hurtful words to elders.
  • Take time to talk to the elders in your home.
  • Learn from elders the things that you are not aware of.
  • Have mercy on the elders.

We should follow these and respect elders. Through this we can get their love and good prayers.”
